Sound (A)

I made a short podcast interview with my friend on the topic of “Who do you want to be?” Then, I put the recording into GarageBand and added more elements to enhance the sound experience. Since the topic involves the past, present, and future, I wanted to make our conversation sound warm, fuzzy, and old-fashioned. I added a dramatic sound at the beginning to open up the audience’s imagination. Then, the silly, childish vocals that follow reveal the conversational hominess and set an inviting tone.

After the assignment, I learned so much about sound-making. It does not require fancy tools or expensive studios, because sound is everywhere. As we stop and listen, there is never really silence around us. The sounds around us are full of possibilities to be explored. As artists, we can intentionally arrange, compile, and control different sounds to make something meaningful and expressive. Sound-based practices can not only activate students’ sensory experiences but also open up another doorway to creative expression. Students can create their own sound assets using software such as GarageBand and explore their meanings, especially in a digital world where technology intermingles with our lives.
