I really enjoyed making a digital collage on the topic of a fantastical landscape. The digital collage made it possible to visualize my bizarre dreams. I love exploring art that can express my subconscious because it helps me find deeper meaning below the surface. I want to continue expanding my inquiry by using digital collage to portray one of my recent, bizarre dreams—especially the one where I had to climb steep ladders to enter a restaurant for free. It was so high up in the sky, and I had to keep going through sheer will, or I would fall.
In this collage, I explored lighting effects and various filters to express the tension and danger of the dream. I emphasized the figures and the restaurant by placing them within the hot, melting sun. I loved how bizarre it turned out. I also played around with scale by placing the skyscrapers at the bottom to emphasize the distance between the sky and the ground. In the end, I would love to create more surrealist collages to portray my dreams!
Joyce, I love this piece. I find that your style comes through in all your work no matter the medium. This collage even though it features an image of NYC still feels like it has the warm, illustrative feel of your other work. I think the composition of this piece is really interesting, and you can definitely see how the narrative is conveyed. I love that it is inspired by a dream... I also have a lot of bizarre dreams and am trying to make more work inspired by them.

I think it’s especially meaningful that you’re drawing inspiration from your own dreams. Dreams are fascinating, and there’s so much curiosity around why we dream and how they function. Using digital collage as a way to journal and visualize a bizarre dream feels like such an engaging and thoughtful approach.

DeleteJoyce, I love this digital collage! Its surreal style really draws me in. The contrast between the square building and the round sun is especially striking, and I can really relate to the kind of blurry, anxious feeling that often shows up in dreams.

I also think the perspective with the ladder and the skyscrapers below does a great job emphasizing the height—it feels really intense in a good way.
