For this assignment, Chenyu and I collaborated to make a box for the spring season to store leaves and flowers. On the outside, we filled it with acrylic laser-cut flower patterns. I really like how it came out, though we had a lot of technical issues with the laser cutter!
Joyce and Chenyu, I really love this piece so much! I know it wasn’t your intention for the black and white colors to be somber, but for me it adds to the meaning. Urns hold dry ashes and memories of a loved one. Your box holds dried plants and memories of moments in nature. To me your box is a memorial to the natural environments that we are losing with continued development as well as a memorial to a time when humans were more in tune with nature. I love your project as is and wouldn’t change it, but if you wanted it to fit the brightness and happiness of spring like you were describing I have a few ideas. 1) 3D print your box to have square cut outs on each side of it that fit the acrylic pieces you cut. Then the acrylic pieces become part of the box and act as a window to its inside. 2) Use transparent acrylic tinted different colors, maybe a soft natural green? When the light shines through the box, the plants inside will feel integrated with the outdoors where they came from. Awesome project!
